A bit about the resource being used ...

Flexible Learning Toolboxes (Toolboxes) are interactive multimedia resources developed by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. Basically they are just like a vocational training text book which has been converted to a website. They include information and learning activities, videos, images all set within various fictitious businesses.  As training support material, they are linked to vocational Training Packages.

Early in 2008, the Northern Territory Department of Education and Training (DET) finalised site licences for 24 Toolboxes for use in NT schools and in DET regional training centres. The challenge now is to assist people, particularly teachers, learn more about how these resources can be used in their lessons.

One way to assist teachers is to demonstrate to them what other territory teachers are doing. Teachers from Alice Springs High School and Nhulunbuy High School offer up their ideas as examples for others.

Accessing Toolboxes via the NT Schools Portal

Step 1: For Northern Territory teachers - login to the NT Schools portal

NB: if you have no success on the first try, check the username has retained ntschools\ before your username on the login screen.

Step 2:Go to Learning Links and Resources page

 Step 1 and 2
Step 3: Select NT Toolboxes from the drop down menu at the top of the page - this gives you an overview of Toolboxes and useful contacts for assistance. Step 3
Step 4: Select a Toolbox from the list available eg Automotive
Step 5: This will load a new page specifically for that Toolbox including Learning Objects and the Teachers' Guide.  Teachers using Toolboxes already strongly recommend downloading the Teachers' Guide as a great starting point.  You can then browse through the Learning Objects, downloading the ones that are appropriate for your needs. Step 5

If you find you want an entire Toolbox, you'll need to contact the DET to arrange for a copy on CD to be sent to your school.  The site licence arrangement means no cost for your school.  Once you get the CD, you've got lots of options including:

  1. Running the Toolbox from the CD
  2. Saving the Toolbox to your computer hard drive
  3. Saving the Toolbox to your school server - you will need to discuss this with the school's IT/computer administrators first!
